A proposed gold mining venture north of Atikokan, Ontario continues to define its mineral resource and prepare for environmental permitting in an effort to be in full production in late 2015.
Osisko Mining Corporation, based in Montreal, is planning an open pit mine near Sawbill and Lynxhead Bays of Marmion Lake north of the Quetico Provincial Park gateway community of Atikokan. The company estimates that some 6.7 million ounces of gold is to be found within 300 feet of the surface in what is known as the Hammond Reef.
The project is slated to include an open pit mine, an ore processing facility located nearby, and a tailings processing facility located east of the mine and the ore processing facility. Current projections expect the mine to operate for 14 years.
Wilderness News Online reported on the project last November, HERE. Then, the company expected permitting would proceed smoothly since, they said, the operation wasn’t expected to involve the use of heavy metals or dangerous chemicals.
