Applications for permits to enter the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness at a few select points next summer will be accepted tomorrow through January 11. Permit reservations for all entry points will be accepted starting on January 25, 2017.

The lottery is for anyone wishing to use the following entry points on Fall and Moose Lakes between May 1 and September 30, 2017:

  • Fall Lake entry points D (Fall Lake, Newton Lake, Pipestone and Beyond) and 24 (Fall Lake)
  • Moose Lake entry points F (Moose Lake to Newfound and Sucker Lakes), G (Moose Lake to Prairie Portage to Basswood Lake); and
  • 25 (Moose Lake)

Reservations can be made online at www.recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777.

Before 2011, all BWCAW entry points were included in the permit lottery. Starting with the 2012 season, the Superior National Forest cancelled it for all lakes except Moose and Fall. The agency originally intended to cancel it for all entry points, but decided to retain it for those entry points where most permits were reserved during the lottery.
