The fee charged to Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness visitors for reserving permits will be cut in half in 2011, Superior National Forest officials announced yesterday.
Effective immediately, it will cost $6 to reserve BWCAW permits, rather than the $12 it cost previously. Forest officials say that efficiency efforts have led to the cost savings. BWCAW reservations are now being handled by the National Recreation Reservation System — www.recreation.gov.

Reservation fees are the charges claimed by the contractor the USFS hires to process BWCAW reservations.
User fees charged to BWCAW visitors remain unchanged from 2010. User fees are used by the Forest Service for improving and maintaining portages and campsites.
