Managers of the Superior National Forest are seeking comments on a project that seeks to combat the spread of non-native invasive plants in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
In an effort to control the spread of invasive plants like Canada Thistle, Goutweed, Tansy, and Spotted Knapweed, the U.S. Forest Service officials are proposing a multi-pronged defense against the plants which includes the use of herbicides. Non-native invasive plants are known to infest only 13 acres of the BWCAW, but officials say immediate action is required to stop the spread of the plants to other areas. Campsite and portages host the bulk of BWCAW’s invasive plants.
