Minnesota senator Amy Klobuchar says the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will remove Minnesota’s gray wolves from the Endangered Species list by the end of next year.

Earlier attempts to remove the population of wolves residing in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan from federal protection have been overturned in the courts. Minnesota’s gray wolf population is estimated at nearly double the 1600 animals required to ensure long-term survival of the species.
Recently, state officials petitioned the USFWS to delist the animal. Endangered Species Act protection makes it illegal for landowners to kill wolves caught preying upon livestock or pets.
According to the Star-Tribune story, Klobuchar also plans to sponsor legislation requiring delisting of wolves in the hopes of stopping future legal challenges.
