Record Early Ice-Out in Region?

Will record warm temperatures for March in northern Minnesota translate into record ice-out dates on area lakes?

That’s the question the Timberjay is asking HERE.

Quetico Superior area lakes are showing dark ice, according to the Marshall Helmberger story, and observers are eying the record ice-out dates heading into April. Lake Vermilion’s early ice-out record is April 14, set in 1945. For Lake Kabetogama, the record is April 13, a mark set in 1998.

International Falls, the longest-recording weather station in the region, finished March more than 10 degrees about its average and broke its warmest-March record established in 1918 by a full degree. In Duluth, it was the warmest March since 1910.
