Looking for last-minute travel ideas for Father’s Day? More than 100 National Parks and monuments are eliminating entrance fees this weekend, including Grand Portage National Monument on the shore of Lake Superior in Northern Minnesota.
Grand Portage National monument commemorates the history of the fur trade, the Voyageurs and Anishinaabeg heritage. Highlights include touring the old fort and the chance to see original birch bark, spruce and cedar canoes and watercraft.
This will be the first of three free weekends in an effort by the National Park Service to boost 2009 attendance at sites across the country:
June 20-21
July 18-19
August 15-16
