Officials at Isle Royale National Park are considering options to address the decline in the population of wolves on the Lake Superior island.

Researchers recently announced, HERE, that the population of wolves on Isle Royale numbers nine animals, only one of which is known to be a female. Researchers and National Park officials worry the population could become extinct in the coming years.
Park officials announced yesterday that they are beginning an internal review of the status of the population and to consider whether or not to intervene in an attempt to reverse the population decline. Likely options are allowing the park’s wolves to go extinct, attempting to revitalize the population by introducing additional wolves to the island, or starting over with a new group of wolves, if the current population goes extinct.
Park officials are expecting to consider options this summer and fall before initiating a formal environmental review.
