Senate Committee to Consider PolyMet

Next week, the Minnesota Senate’s Environment and Natural Resources Committee will hear testimony on issues surrounding PolyMet Mining Company’s proposed NorthMet copper-nickel and precious metals mine.

The committee, chaired by DFL Senator Satveer Chaudhary, will convene for two hearings on Monday, March 8. At a 12:30 p.m. hearing that day, the agenda is: “DNR History of Mining – Process/Regulation/Environmental Review, PolyMet Presentation on NorthMet Project.” At a 6:00 p.m. hearing, the agenda is listed as: “Review of Draft EIS by DNR, Comments on the EIS.”

A third hearing on Wednesday, March 10 at 6:00 p.m. will address “Nonferrous metallic mineral mining financial assurance.”

Legislation sponsored by the DFL State Senator Jim Carlson seeks to assure that the money secured by the state from PolyMet for potential environmental clean-up is adequate to pay costs.
