Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness visitors have become older and more educated in the last 40 years, a new report reveals.

The research, which examined survey data taken in 1969, 1991, and 2007, found the average age of BWCAW visitors rose from 26-years-old in 1969, to 36 in 1991, and 45 in 2007. Over the same period of time, the number of BWCAW canoeists with at least some college education rose from 49% of visitors in 1969 to a whopping 93% in 2007.
The study, which was led by Robert Dvorak of Central Michigan University, sought to determine trends in use and user characteristics in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
The study found that males make up roughly 75% of visitors to the BWCAW, a percentage largely unchanged over the last four decades.
