Field studies for the Namakan River Hydro Development Project proposed by the Ojibway Power and Energy Group have been completed, the organization announced recently.

OPEG, a partnership between the Lac la Croix First Nation and Chant Construction of Aurora, Ontario, expects publication of its Draft Environmental Report on the project in November.

After publication, a 60-day public review period, which will include “open house” meetings, will follow.

OPEG anticipates a spring 2010 government decision on the 6.4 megawatt hydroelectric generating station at High Falls on the Namakan River west of Quetico Provincial Park.

The most recent issue of Wilderness News outlined the environmental assessment process for the project, HERE.

The Quetico Superior Foundation, which publishes Wilderness News and Wilderness News Online opposes the project. Read their position statement HERE.
