According to a recent report by Minnesota Public Radio, researchers are seeking the public’s help in tracking moose in northeastern Minnesota.
Citing concerns over higher than expected mortality in adult moose and fewer moose sightings in general, University of Minnesota, Duluth researchers have set up a web site where Minnesotans can file reports when they see moose.
According to the site, “in less than 20 years moose in northwestern Minnesota declined from over 4,000 to fewer than 100.” Researchers wonder if the northeastern population, currently at about 7,000, is on the brink of a similar decline. Reports submitted through the web site will supplement an aerial moose survey conducted each January to create a better understanding of what is happening to the region’s moose population.
