Superior Resource Advisory Committee seeks members to shape Forest’s future

The Superior Resource Advisory Committee (RAC) is looking for members who will help advise the Forest Service on upcoming projects. Most projects focus on restoring and managing federal lands with a focus on benefit to surrounding communities.

Committee helps prioritize funding

Established under the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act (Act), the RAC reviews proposals that aim to benefit the Superior National Forest’s land, water, recreational resources, and infrastructure. After evaluating these proposals, the committee recommends which projects should receive funding.

Ken Gilbertson, a current RAC member, says, “I am proud to be a member of the Resource Advisory Committee. Over the past three years, it has been deeply satisfying to contribute to management decisions about natural resources. This includes supporting agencies and nonprofit organizations that implement awarded funds. The time commitment is balanced, allowing me to stay engaged without overwhelming my schedule, which is why I’ve applied for another term.”

The Superior National Forest covers 3.9 million acres and includes the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. (Map USFS – Superior National Forest)

Cooperation between feds and communities

The recommendations of the RAC fall under Title II of the Act. Under Title II, qualified counties may distribute part of their share of the State Payment to the title. These funds go to projects that encourage healthy ecosystems in national forests while supporting surrounding communities.

Members come from various backgrounds, including outdoor enthusiasts, environmental organizations, elected officials, Tribal representatives, and those involved in the timber industry. The Secretary of Agriculture appoints fifteen members who serve four-year terms. During the meetings, a Designated Federal Officer leads the committee, with input from the Committee Chair. The public is welcome to attend the meetings. All committee activities comply with the Federal Advisory Committee Act.

Applications are due by February 15, 2025. All voting members must live in Minnesota, with preference given to residents of Cook, Lake, or St. Louis counties.
