The Ely Winter Festival (Feb 2-12, 2023) attracts thousands of visitors every year. Minnesotans are known for getting outdoors even in the depths of winter and the town of Ely is no exception, sharing the warmth of their community and vibrant local arts against the stunning backdrop of the Boundary Waters region. The festival celebrates the winter season and provides visitors with new ways to enjoy the region every year. From outdoor activities to indoor events, there is something for everyone at the Ely Winter Festival.

History of a northwoods winter celebration

The Ely Winter Festival has been a staple in the community for decades. Growing from a nordic ski race to a snow-sculpting event and adding the Ely Artwalk, the festival has evolved to bring people together and celebrate the winter season. Over the years, the festival has grown and evolved, and it now offers a variety of events and activities for visitors of all ages.

World-class snow sculpting

Whiteside Park in Ely is transformed every year into an art exhibition carved entirely of snow, and its an event with an international reputation. Teams of artists, professionals and amateurs from all over the world turn 8-ft and 12-ft blocks of snow into works of art. Visitors are encouraged to ask questions, interact with the sculptures and sculptors and keep warm by the fire. Walk through at night to see the works illuminated by the glow of ice candles. The Snow Sculpting Symposium is not a competition and no prizes are given, making it a unique celebration of skills and artistry.

Outdoor activities abound

There’s no better way to enjoy the winter season and take advantage of the beautiful surroundings in Ely, Minnesota. Past years have included a fun run, ice fishing and snowmobiling. Highlights this year include cross-country skiing by candlelight and a special snowshoe tour at Listening Point, the iconic writing retreat of Sigurd Olson.
