A law passed in May that will allow loaded firearms in Voyageurs and other national parks is not in effect yet.
That’s the message Voyaguers officials are spreading in THIS recent media release.
A provision in the Credit Card Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure Act of 2009, which was signed into law on May 22, allows the carrying of loaded firearms in units of the National Park and National Wildlife Refuge Systems when authorized by state law and not otherwise prohibited. However, the law does not take effect until February 22, 2010, park officials are reminding visitors.
Until that time, officials note, the current prohibition against the possession of firearms in national parks will remain in place.
In other Voyageurs news …Ulf Gafvert and Al Kirschbaum of the National Park Service’s Great Lakes Inventory and Monitoring Program will present a talk this Friday titled: “Change: It’s Not Just in Your Pocket.” The presentation will use satellite and aerial photos to track changes in the forests in and around Voyageurs National Park.
Details on the presentation can be found HERE.
