Latest Voyageurs Park Newsletter Published

A latest edition of the Voyageurs National Park’s newsletter, The Voyageur Messenger, highlights the park’s Inventory and Monitoring Program and remembers the region’s wildfires of 1936.

The the Fall 2011/Winter 2012 edition of the newsletter can be found HERE.

The park’s Inventory and Monitoring Program seeks to assess water quality on the park’s interior lakes, quantify songbird populations, catalog contaminants in fish, and note changes in forest plant communities. The program is conducted in partnership with the Great Lakes Network Inventory and Monitoring Program.

During the hot, dry summer of 1936, fires burned more than 18,000 acres on the Kabetogama Peninsula, before the area was organized as a National Park. Civil Conservation Corps crews battled the fires from early July until late September of that year.

The current newsletter also discusses repairs to the park’s Ellsworth Rock Gardens, notes exotic species education efforts, reviews the Heart of the Continent Partnership’s International Community Congress, and lauds this fall’s Volunteer Rendezvous.
