People interested in taking a leadership role in trail projects are invited to a three-day training session on the Superior National Forest in September.
A North Country Trail Crew Leader Training will be held September 21-23 at Gunflint Lodge.
“The NCT Crew Leader training will prepare you to organize and lead volunteers and plan successful trail projects along the Trail,” the North Country Trail Association (NCTA) says. “Topics include: crew safety, leading and motivating volunteers, recruiting participants, setting work priorities, project planning, sharing your work and more!”
No experience is necessary to attend the training. It will cover “everything you need to know” to lead trail-clearing or maintenance/building projects on the North Country Trail, Kekekabic Trail, or Border Route Trail. Topics will include volunteer recruitment and communication; planning a trip route, and food and gear; canoeing into a site and running a group camp; and trail standards, tools, and volunteer management.
The program will feature both indoor and outdoor experiences, including a full-day Crew Leader training covering safety, emergency situations, and leadership. Additional breakout field work sessions will focus on either front-country and remote work trips.
The training is offered by NCTA in partnership with the Kekekabic Trail Chapter, Border Route Trail Association, and Northwoods Volunteer Connection.
Limited meals and bunkhouse lodging are provided for participants.
