Starting in 2014, it will be possible to reserve some campsites in Voyageurs National Park. Previously, all sites in the park were available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The new system is the result of a three-year public engagement process. Reservations for all campsites in the park will be phased in over the next few years, starting next season with interior and main lake campsites, houseboats sites, and rentals of boats on interior lakes.
More sites in the park will be added to the reservation system in coming years, based on evaluation of the first phase. Park superintendent Mike Ward said in a statement, “This is a large project and will take time and monitoring to achieve success. We will continue to implement the other 240 sites in the park based on staffing and the results of the monitoring.”
Reservable sites will require paying a fee. Camping has previously been free throughout the park. The fees are:
- Small Campsite with no tent pad: $16 per night
- Small Campsite with 1 tent pad: $18 per night
- Small Campsite with 2 tent pads: $20 per night
- Large Campsites: $24 per night
- Canoe/rowboat: $12 per boat per night
The park will start taking reservations in February at www.recreation.gov or by calling the National Call Center at (877) 444-6777.
