The St. Paul Pioneer Press warns that climate change will have a serious impact on the Midwest. Because the Quetico-Superior region is at a crossroads of forest communities: the boreal forest to the north, the broadleaf deciduous forest to the south and the oak savanna to the west, affects of climate change to ecosystems may occur faster than in other areas of the country. Micro climates, soil conditions and natural as well as human caused disturbances result in a mosaic of forest communities all vulnerable to change with the slightest change in climate. At presentations in the Twin Cities, University of Minnesota Director of the Center for Forest Ecology, Lee Frelich, has warned that changes in forest communities are messy and the transition periods can provide opportunities for aggressive invasive species to take hold.
