What makes the Boundary Waters so inspiring? Is it the towering pine-studded shorelines, listening to the dip of the paddle, long days of fishing? Is it the elusive sighting of a moose, or the eagle that watches your catch so closely? Is it camping under spectacular starry night skies, or the challenge of new adventures?
Illustrator and photographer Erik Fremstad created a coloring page capturing this view of Caribou Lake from a recent trip, in his distinctive style. We asked Erik about his connection to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and the border lakes region:
“It is hard to beat the anticipation when you have a canoe flipped up on your shoulders just about to drop into the water for the first time, adventure lies ahead. Adventure leads to new experiences, sights, memories, and that is what keeps me coming back to the BWCA. I’m born and raised in Minnesota, but only started visiting the BWCA about five years ago. Since then, I’ve visited the Boundary Waters 2-3 times per year to reconnect with nature and explore new lakes and trails. My favorite place to visit so far is the Rose Lake area off of the Gunflint Trail, I’ve travelled that area by canoe and by foot, hiking the Border Route Trail. One of my fondest memories was hiking to the top of the Rose Lake Cliffs near peak fall color and having the entire vista to myself.”
