Initiative Focuses on Voyageur Legacy

A tourism initiative for the landscape between Thunder Bay, Ontario and Winnipeg, Manitoba plans to use the area’s legacy as the route of the voyageurs to draw tourists.

The Atikokan Progress has the story HERE.

After four years of planning, the Path of the Voyageur tourism initiative has hired a regional coordinator who will identify and recruit communities interested in joint marketing of a Voyageur-themed tourism route.

The initiative hopes to attracted visitors to the cultural attractions along the relatively unspoiled landscape between historic Fort William, near Thunder Bay and Fort Garry, in Winnipeg, which includes Quetico Provincial Park.

Unlike many other areas along the cross-continental “Voyageurs Highway” used during the Fur Trade era, the route across northern Ontario into Manitoba is relatively undeveloped.

The Path of the Voyageur initiative plans a website, maps identifying canoe routes and community attractions, and possibly some pilot projects as it begins its mission.
