The heads of Voyageurs National Park and the Superior National Forest asked Minnesota Pollution Contol Agency board members to tighten restrictions on taconite and coal-burning power plants as the state implements new haze reduction regulations.

Voyageurs superintendent Mike Ward and SNF supervisor Jim Sanders addressed the MPCA board last week. The Federal land managers are concerned that the proposed regulations don’t ask enough of nearby Iron Range taconite plants nor from Xcel Energy’s Sherco coal-fie power plant in Elk River, which is said to impair visibility at Voyageurs 165 days each year.
Earlier this year, as we reported HERE, environmental groups asked the MPCA for tougher regulations to improve air-quality over Voyaguers, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, and Isle Royale National Park.
