New video encourages low-impact camping in Voyageurs National Park

A new five-minute video is intended to help educate park visitors about outdoor ethics and safe, enjoyable tent camping at the park on Minnesota’s northern border. Produced by the Voyageurs National Park Association with support from the Quetico Superior Foundation, the film features beautiful cinematography showing the many ways to enjoy a park that is 40% water.

“Thank you for choosing to visit Voyageurs National Park and for following these acts of stewardship to keep this peaceful landscape of woods and water healthy and thriving for future generations,” the narrator says. The video focuses on “frontcountry” camping (i.e. camping accessed by boats on the park’s main lakes).

In addition to covering Leave No Trace practices and providing general information about planning a camping trip at Voyageurs, it also promotes the opportunities to access the park’s 150 frontcountry tent-camping sites by water.

Unlike the neighboring Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, frontcountry campsites include bear boxes, picnic tables, constructed tent pads, and other amenities. Some also have boat docks for mooring. All sites are reserveable in advance through recreation.gov.

Voyageurs frontcountry also includes some group campsites that can accommodate more than 30 people.

Recommendations and guidelines include completely dousing fires, ensuring your coolers and other food and beverage will fit into the bear lockers, bringing drinking water and approved firewood, and checking that tents will fit on the 14′ x 14′ tent pads.
