A Is for Agates: A Lake Superior Alphabet Book is a love letter to Gitchi-Gami, and a lyrical new addition to northwoods children’s books. Created by two artists with deep connection in the Lake Superior region, the book celebrates the landscape, wildlife, and heritage surrounding the big lake.
Rather than presenting a simple list of alphabet words, Baraks guides readers through the letters using gentle, melodic rhymes that are fun to read aloud. Images of the North Shore’s iconic features — from glowing northern lights and rocky beaches to the region’s unique flora and fauna — fill the pages.
When my daughter was little, we loved anything that rhymed, as she parroted the words back to me in sing-song, even intimidating words seemed easier. She still loves a picture book and a witty rhyme, and chimes in as she hands me ‘A is for Agates: “It’s really, really beautiful. It makes me appreciate the beauty of the earth.”
For us here at Wilderness News, one of the highlights comes right in the heart of the alphabet with, “Q is for the Quetico-Superior region / R is for the raspberries I pick when in season.” Seeing our beloved border lakes region and northwoods traditions celebrated for the next generation of wilderness stewards is a joy.
Baraks’ verses balance education with genuine affection for the North, and the book concludes with a helpful glossary that allows curious young readers to explore the words behind each letter.

The narrative is perfectly paired with the artwork of northeast Minnesota artist Lisa Perrin-Kosmo. She brings us up close to owls, otter and moose, rippling rapids and agate-strewn shores. The illustrations reflect a deep familiarity with the North, inviting children and parents alike to slow down and appreciate the small wonders of our world.
A Is for Agates is a charming tribute to the Lake Superior ecosystem and the traditions woven throughout the North Shore. Thoughtful, beautifully illustrated, and rooted in place – bring it on your next trip up north, keep it at the cabin for storytime by the fire.
